This beautiful painting, titled "Radha Krishna," is by Nandalal Bose, one of the pioneers of modern Indian art. It reflects his unique “Indian style” of painting, which was deeply inspired by Indian mythology, village life, and the grace of Indian women. Bose was heavily influenced by the Tagore family and the ancient Ajanta cave murals, and in 1921, he became the principal of Kala Bhavan at Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore.
In this artwork, Radha and Krishna—the eternal symbols of divine love and devotion—are portrayed with great elegance. Krishna is shown with his iconic blue skin tone, playing the flute, while Radha stands beside him with a golden complexion, full of grace and admiration. The painting is known for its stylized figures, bold colours, and decorative elements, all of which reflect Bose’s artistic vision.
Nandalal Bose was known for bringing Indian folk art and local traditions into the mainstream through his paintings. Though the exact year of this painting is not confirmed, Bose was active in the early to mid-20th century—he was born in 1882 and passed away in 1966. He also had the honour of illustrating parts of the Indian Constitution. A similar painting of his, titled "Radha Learning to Play the Flute," was made in 1940. So, it’s quite likely that this painting also dates back to the 1930s or 1940s.
This work truly reflects the soul of Indian tradition and the devotional bond between Radha and Krishna, brought to life by Nandalal Bose’s masterful brush.
