This image shows a Kalighat painting by Jamini Roy, featuring Ram and Sita. The Kalighat painting style started in the 19th century, near the famous Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal. These artworks were first made by patuas, or scroll painters, and became well-known for their bright colours, flowing brushstrokes, and bold outlines.
In this particular painting, Ram is shown in green colour, offering a bowl to Sita, who is sitting inside a hut. The painting style is simple yet striking, with clear outlines, vivid colours, and stylised forms, inspired by the folk art and traditional ‘patas’ from the villages of Bengal. Jamini Roy, who loved rural life and Indian traditions, often painted themes from mythology and everyday village life.
Although we don’t know the exact year of this artwork, Jamini Roy created most of his famous works between the 1920s and 1970s. The Kalighat style itself was at its peak between the mid-19th and early 20th century. Today, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London has the largest collection of Kalighat paintings in the world.
