"Tree Roots" is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh, made in July 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Many believe this was his last painting, possibly done on the very same day he shot himself, July 27, 1890. The artwork shows a close-up view of twisted tree roots, along with some plants and leaves, and the sandy forest ground can be seen underneath.
The painting is full of bright colours and strong, expressive brushstrokes—very typical of Van Gogh’s unique style. In fact, the exact spot where he painted it was only discovered in 2020, thanks to an old postcard showing a similar scene.
